Radio 2000 Disability Transport project
Radio 2000 embarked on the Accessible Transport Project, now in its second year on Thursday 27th October in support of Transport Month.
A group of 20+, including a number of people with disabilities, representatives of the Office of The Premier and other Government Departments, South African celebrities, SABC Radio News and Radio 2000 personnel embarked on journey to test the accessibility of the public transport system. The journey started at the Rea Vaya station right outside SABC Aukland Park. From there the next stop was Park Station, where the group caught the Gautrain to Marlboro Station and then on to OR Tambo Airport before returning to the SABC. A number of challenges were experienced, including not being able to get onto and off of pavements at the various stations, Rea Vaya buses only being able to transport 2 wheelchair users per ride and lifts not working at Gauteng Marlboro Station. These challenges didn’t discourage the group from completing project and reporting back to the necessary departments. All in all, it was a great activity enjoyed by all who participated.
