On Air Personality
Gavin Koppel is proud for folks to know that he is the daddy of SA singer/composer - Danny K. He sometimes calls himself Daddy K with a wry smile. Some even call him Papa K.
“I’m very proud of my boy & that he chose music was never an issue for me as I have music pumping in my own veins. I’m his biggest fan! I’ve loved music since I was a young boy. My Dad played Jazz in our home day and night. I graduated to my own sound and some of the first records I bought were Elvis, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard but I then heard The O Jays, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and The Staple Singers I was hooked . That was my kind of music. Those beats, the harmonies, the melodies, the horns and strings just blew me away.”
My great passion is radio
It always was and as a kid I remember hanging around the SABC studios at the Rand Easter Show to catch a glimpse of the jocks and press up against the glass watching them in action.
I could never begin to describe to you what it means for me to be in a studio behind the microphone. I get such a rush from it.
The music I play on Radio 2000 is from the same era I grew up with, so if ever there was a qualified deejay to speak about this music, I sincerely believe it’s me.
I studied every album sleeve as if I was going into an exam but it is my passion and it’s what I need to know.
I have been blessed to visit the greatest record labels and recording studios in the world and my annual pilgrimage takes to music festivals and concerts.
The last concert I was at was Bruno Mars 24k concert at the Boston Garden and he is phenomenal. He takes it back to a time of disco, funk and soul and he does it oh so sweet.
The BIG WEEK -END is going to shake up radio like never before because I aim to bring it, all the time, every time and then some. Remember the words of James Brown …. Papa’s got a brand new bag
